Electronics
In East Sweden, there is an enormous amount of electronics know-how and Sweden's second largest accumulation of electronics companies. The System On Chip Design Centre further strengthens East Sweden's leading position in microelectronics development.
Research and Education
The region has a broad and strong research base within the electronics area. “System-on-a-Chip”, (Socware), focuses on technology for wireless and broadband communications, and the whole chain is represented in the region, from research and development to production.
Another interesting project is COIN - Centre for Organic Informatics, which is established in East Sweden, thanks to the outstanding research in organic and polymer electronics.
The research institute Acreo is a key player in the region's electronics development, bridging the gap between academic research and industrial commercialisation.. Acreo provides contract R&D and production resources for new innovative products in microelectronics and optics. The institute's activities range from basic research through development and to the final stage of production.
By combining Acreo’s strengths within the analog technology with the digital tradition at the University of Linköping, there are great possibilities to develop the technology for what is called “mixed-signal chip”, which is considered to be a great challenge within the electronics area. Acreo has also generated several spin-off companies.
Availability of experienced labour is very good as regards engineers with masters' degrees and PhDs, as well as qualified personnel with experience of electronics production.
Interesting companies in the region
Several important international companies are present in the region, such as
- Whirlpool produces microwave ovens
- ÅF-System develops products and systems within the telecom sector
- Etteplan has core competence within mecatronics, automation and electric design
- PartnerTech operates in the area IT/mechatronics
Norstel AB is developing and manufacturing silicon carbide crystals, wafers and epitaxial layers for demanding applications.
Candor’s product program covers electoless and electrolytic process steps of manufacturing of printed circuit boards.
Integrated Vision Products develops high performance, smart cameras for three-dimensional inspection and Linköping is at the cutting edge of advanced graphics processing. Note is an electronics manufacturing service provider of design assistance, distribution, and after-market services.
There are also many small successful companies, one of them is ThinFilm Electronics. Their polymer memory technology combines the properties of specially developed polymers and a unique system architecture. Rimaster is another company that offers solutions for development and production of electrical, electronic and mechatronic products.
