Life Sciences

The industry sector of Life Science Technologies in East Sweden is a manifestation of the entrepreneurial spirit fostered by cross-disciplinary research at Linköping University.

In 2001, Linköping University launched a strategic initiative within Life Science Technologies and Biomedicine, comprising 16 new professorships in e.g. bioinformatics, sensor science, molecular biotechnology, computional biology and organic chemistry. The investment in Life Science Technologies builds on a number of well-established research profiles in biological physics, materials science, computer science, micro-electronics and biomedicine. These profiles are based on a strong tradition of multidisciplinary research and co-operation across faculty borders.

Core competence in the region includes medical technology and imaging. Clinical and technical competences are combined at the Centre of Medical Image Science and Visualisation, CMIV, sponsored by Linköping University, the County Council in East Sweden and Sectra AB. The internationally recognised competence centre in non-invasive medical measurements, NIMED, conducts active collaboration with industry. Most of the companies in the region are in the medical device sector, e.g. Electa, Optovent and PartnerTech.

Berzelius Clinical Research Centre performs clinical trials in all phases with focus on pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Early studies in patients under rigorously controlled conditions are conducted at The Proof of Concept Clinic, which is connected with the hospital's intensive care unit.

Linköping University is recognised for excellence in sensor science. The Biacore technology and the electronic nose and tongue were developed in Linköping. The Swedish Sensor Centre, S-SENCE, develops bio- and chemical sensors for industrial applications. Unique research, combining polymer, protein and sensor science, is presently performed at the University.

Several new companies within the life science technologies have recently been established in East Sweden, e.g. Micromuscle, Dynamic Code and ModPro. Further more start-ups are presently in the pipeline to be established.
