Modelling & Simulation
East Sweden is one of Europe’s top 10 regions with world-class competency in simulation and modelling.
Scientific Visualization
The common denominator for the cluster is an ability to deal with vast quantities of data and simulation of scientific systems. The technical development within scientific visualization is driven by the demand for new applications rather than by what can be developed using existing tools.
New research can be illustrated in an attractive manner, using scientific visualiza-tion. At the Norrköping Visualization and Interaction Studio, physical systems are visualized off-line. In the theatre it is possible to experience a supernova explosion at close range, or take a walk in the centre of Norrköping a hundred years ago.
In today's visualization industry, new opportunities are appearing for adopting current research findings in areas that may seem intangible, such as nanophysics, weather or logistics. As part of its research, NVIS has conducted projects in co-operation with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, the European aviation authority, and Saab.
Medical Visualization
In the medicine area, NVIS cooperates with different departments at Linköping University. Research is focused on medical visualization that combines both technical and clinical aspects. Industrial partners are Sectra and Siemens, global leaders in the field of medical image research and visualization.
The Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on front-line research within multidisciplinary projects providing solutions for tomorrow's clinical issues.
The latest generation of CT, MRI and ultrasound scanners generate multidimensional data sets of rapidly increasing size. Research activities within CMIV include both medical and technical research.
Entertainment and Media Visualization
Another area of interest for visualization technology is the entertainment industry. Meqon is a company delivering world-class character simulation support, enabling game creators to have fully dynamic environments with animation and simulation. Their products can also be used in industrial production. Master’s students in simulation and visualization at Linköping University’s Norrköping Campus have assisted in the development of special effects in Los Angeles and New York for Hollywood films and NASA alike.
Also Media technology, such as digital film, video and special effects, is at the leading edge. The company Sciss creates interactive visualisation of Cosmos for planetariums, and Dreampark develop interactive TV on the broadband net.
