The software industry sector in East Sweden is by tradition very strong and maintains a high standard. The industry sector has a wide variety of companies within several niches.

Education and research

The competence assembled at Linköping University plays an important role in the positive development of the industry sector. The National Super Computer Centre is at the leading edge of national supercomputing resources. The Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping University, is by far Sweden's largest computer research department, and has generated a number of very successful spin-off companies. A resourceful environment has been created for the spin-off companies through entrepreneur programmes and incubators at Mjärdevi and ProNova Science Parks.

Since Linköping University has Sweden's broadest offer of educational programmes in Information Technology, the provision of IT personnel is guaranteed. The supply of qualified IT personnel has in recent times attracted several IT companies to establish units in the region.

Interesting companies

Two of the world top-10 companies within business systems, Intentia International and IFS, started up in Linköping as spin-off companies from Linköping University. Both companies have important research and development in Linköping. The two companies have today more than 2000 employees each and operate in about 40 countries.

The region has numerous companies operating in many other software areas. Combitech Systems have core competence in system development of technical built-in real-time systems. Meqon delivers world class character simulation support, enabling game creators to have fully dynamic environments with any mix of animation and simulation. Kreatel is a leading provider of IP set-top box solutions for delivery of TV-centric services. Successfully deployed by DSL and fiber operators internationally, the Kreatel system secures reliable operation by combining set-top box hardware with sophisticated software.
Enea is specialized in the OSE real-time operating system and associated consulting services and third-party software.
